전장은 개인과 국가가 자신의 신념과 이익을 지키기 위해 싸우는 갈등의 장소다. 그곳은 사회의 규칙이 종종 무시되거나 정지되는 폭력의 장소입니다. 그런 곳에서는 인본주의와 도덕의 가치와 전쟁의 가혹한 현실을 조화시키기 어려울 수 있습니다. 과연, "전장에서 휴머니즘을 찾지 말라"는 한국 속담처럼 말이다.

이 에세이에서는 이 속담의 의미와 우리 삶과의 관련성을 탐구할 것이다. 나는 전쟁터가 우리 주변 세계의 현실과 우리의 도덕적 가치를 조화시키려고 노력할 때 우리 모두가 직면하는 도전의 극단적인 예를 나타낸다고 주장할 것입니다. 우리 모두가 전쟁터에서 군인과 같은 생사 결정에 직면하지는 않지만, 우리 모두는 어려운 선택에 직면하고 있으며 도덕적 가치와 실제적인 고려 사이에서 균형을 잡을 방법을 찾아야 합니다.

아이디어 극단적인 상황에서 도덕성을 유지하기 어렵다는 것은 새로운 것이 아닙니다. 철학자 프리드리히 니체(Friedrich Nietzsche)는 "괴물과 싸우지 마십시오. 괴물이 되지 않도록 하십시오. 심연을 들여다보면 심연도 당신을 들여다보고 있습니다." 이 감정은 다른 많은 문학 및 철학 작품에 반영되어 있으며 역경에 직면하여 우리의 가치를 타협하지 않도록 주의해야 한다는 생각을 말해줍니다.

우리의 가치를 유지하는 것의 중요성도 강조됩니다. 한국 속담에 "말을 어기면 얻는 것보다 잃는 것이 많다"는 말이 있다. 이 속담은 우리의 약속과 약속이 중요하며 이를 어기면 부정적인 결과를 초래할 수 있다는 생각을 말해줍니다. 전쟁의 맥락에서 이것은 교전 규칙 위반, 전쟁 범죄 또는 동지 배신을 의미할 수 있습니다.

궁극적으로 전장에서 우리의 가치관을 유지할 수 있는지 여부는 각자가 우리 스스로 대답해야 합니다. 누군가는 이런 극한 상황에서 자신의 도덕적 가치관을 유지하는 것이 불가능하다고 주장하는 반면, 다른 누군가는 어떤 상황에서도 옳은 일을 하는 것이 항상 가능하다고 주장할 수 있습니다.

결론적으로 한국인은 "전쟁터에서 휴머니즘을 찾지 말라"는 속담은 극한 상황에서 우리의 도덕적 가치를 유지하기 어려울 수 있다는 생각을 말해줍니다. 그러나 이것이 우리의 가치를 완전히 포기해야 한다는 의미는 아닙니다. 오히려 우리는 상황의 실질적인 현실과 우리의 가치를 신중하게 비교하고 가능한 한 우리의 가치에 따라 행동하는 방법을 찾아야 합니다. 이것은 전장만이 아닌 우리 모두의 삶에서 직면하는 도전입니다.

In such a place, it can be difficult to reconcile the values of humanism and morality with the harsh realities of war. Indeed, as the Korean proverb goes, "Don't look for humanism on the battlefield."

In this essay, I will explore the meaning of this proverb and its relevance to our lives. I will argue that the battlefield represents an extreme example of the challenges we all face when trying to reconcile our moral values with the realities of the world around us. While we may not all face the same life-and-death decisions as soldiers on a battlefield, we are all faced with difficult choices and must find a way to balance our moral values with practical considerations.

The idea that morality is difficult to maintain in extreme circumstances is not new. As the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche wrote, "Battle not with monsters lest ye become a monster; and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes into you." This sentiment is echoed in many other works of literature and philosophy, and speaks to the idea that we must be careful not to compromise our values in the face of adversity.

The importance of maintaining our values is also emphasized by the Korean proverb "One loses more than one gains by breaking one's word." This proverb speaks to the idea that our commitments and promises are important, and that breaking them can have negative consequences. In the context of war, this could mean violating the rules of engagement, committing war crimes, or betraying one's comrades.

However, the reality is that in many cases, people are forced to compromise their values in order to survive. As the American writer John Steinbeck wrote, "Man is the only kind of varmint who sets his own trap, baits it, then steps in it." In other words, we often create our own problems and must find a way to get out of them. In extreme circumstances, this can mean doing things that we would not normally do in order to survive.

Ultimately, the question of whether or not it is possible to maintain our values on the battlefield is one that each of us must answer for ourselves. Some may argue that it is impossible to maintain one's moral values in such extreme circumstances, while others may argue that it is always possible to do the right thing, no matter what the situation.

In conclusion, the Korean proverb "Don't look for humanism on the battlefield" speaks to the idea that in extreme circumstances, it can be difficult to maintain our moral values. However, this does not mean that we should abandon our values altogether. Rather, we must be careful to weigh our values against the practical realities of the situation, and find a way to act in accordance with our values as much as possible. This is a challenge that we all face in our lives, not just on the battlefield.
